I started my osteopathic training at the British School of Osteopathy after finishing my A-levels in 1984. The course was full-time for four years and led to the award of a Diploma in Osteopathy (D.O.), this allowed me to Register with the General Council and Register of Osteopaths (GCRO) and so become a Member of the Register of Osteopaths (MRO), and to join the Osteopathic Association of Great Britain (OAGB). The functions of these organisations have now been taken over by other bodies; the GCRO by the General Osteopathic Council and the OAGB by the British Osteopathic Association. After qualifying in 1988 I began work as the osteopath in a martial arts gym located in the City of London and in a private practice in North London. After a year I moved to Derbyshire where I continued to work in private practice for 8 years full-time and a further 3 years part-time. The change from full- to part-time work in Derbyshire occurred when I took over the Edenbridge practice and travelled between the two counties each week. Thankfully, I no longer travel backwards and forwards as the practice in Derbyshire is now being run by another registered osteopath. The reason for the move to the South was due to getting married in 1994, and my wife and her family are from this area of the country so it was necessary for me to relocate. Since qualifying I have continued to update my osteopathic knowledge and have taken many short courses ranging from sports osteopathy to paediatric osteopathy, to name only two. I have also upgraded my original qualification by study at the British College of Naturopathy and Osteopathy and now have a Bachelor of Science with upper second class honours and a Master of Science with merit, both in Osteopathic Medicine. The knowledge gained during these courses has allowed me to return to the British School of Osteopathy where I work as senior tutor in the general osteopathic clinic and run the community project treating the local elderly.
